My desire to go into psychology began with the ambition to become a clinician; I have always been into pathology. I quickly learned, however, that there wasn't enough room for my questions and curiosities in a clinical setting.
After moving to Boston from the Middle East for my undergraduate education, I began to find the answers to questions I've always had; what makes us feel the way we feel? How do we classify psychopathology? How do we treat those with mental illness, both medically and culturally?
Though some answers came about, more often than not, I encountered more questions. My interests are now beyond the medical model; I'm fascinated by how mental illness could be an adaptation to an environment that no longer exists.
I am currently studying for my Behavioral Sciences PhD at the University of Rhode Island. I look at mental health from a cultural lens and I hope to expand on that to also consider psychopathology.
The field of evolutionary psychopathology is still on the path to being recognized as a valid contributor to biosocial disciplines. Thus, there is so much to do!
I hope to study more complex disorders such as Bipolar Disorder and Seasonal Affective Disorder, and phenomena that arise from psychopathology, like suicide and psychosis.
